In celebration of National Knitting Month, Helen Baines owner of Victorian Arcade's resident haberdashery offers her top tips for anyone eager to take up knitting.
The best place to start is simply to ask. With over 50 years' experience between myself and my work partner Kay Rugman we're able to offer expert advice to beginners and even those more advanced.
Basic yarn is our friend. Here at Helen's Haberdashery we advise shoppers to use a simple double knit wool. We suggest starting with a basic worsted-weight yarn in a bright colour. This will help identify the stiches more easily and recognise any mistakes.
We are lucky enough to have space to host regular workshops where everyone from beginners to those who are more advanced are invited to come along on the first and third Saturday of the month to meet with Walsall knitters and crocheters who are able to offer unique and interesting advice on a variety of knitting and crochet skills.
One thing we always say is don't give up or be put off by a new knitting pattern. They often appear intimidating at first but the chances are as soon as you get into knitting things will fall into place. Start with a beginner's pattern and be sure to read the step by step instructions carefully.
If you're in need of expert advice bring your pattern into the shop and we will happily sit down and talk you through it.
Helen's Haberdashery is open Monday to Saturday 9.30am until 4.30pm closed Thursday and welcomes knitters and crocheters of all levels.
